Asian Man records has long been known to pull its roster from
the far corners of the world. This has allowed them to bring
attention to some of the world’s best and most original
ska bands that might otherwise go overlooked in the U.S. Their
latest signing hails all the way from Oslo, Norway. No Torso
is a six piece ska band that combines pop, third wave and
even some reggae elements to create a solidly put together
collection of well written songs. The sticker on the package
describes it as “soulful ska with hints of rock, for
fans of RX bandits, LTJ, and Madness”….hmmm.....well
yeah, I guess if you take Less than Jake, removed a bit of
punk, added a little more pop ska and put in a more “soulful”
singer, you might get a vague idea. I’m not sure about
the Madness comparison, other than there is some cool sax
playing. As for “rock”, well when I think of rock
I think of bands like Foghat and Blue Oyster Cult, which frankly
is my problem, and they sound nothing like that (thankfully).
But if you mean rock in the same sense as MU330, then I guess
I can see it. And oh yeah, they sing in English. This is a
cd worth tracking down, let’s hope they stick around
and make it over to tour the U.S. sometime.
